What Is Distressed Wood Flooring?

Before the Industrial Revolution and the advent of manufactured floorboards, sawmills and watermills were the epicenters for the preparation and cutting of timber into flooring and other construction materials. These early wood treatments created naturally occurring grooves, knotholes, and other imperfections.

Distressed wood flooring techniques replicate the appearance of those old wooden planks by adding scrapes, saw marks, and other aging processes to make a new floor look antiquated.

Some commonly practiced techniques to achieve a weathered, distressed look to new hardwood flooring planks include:

  • Hand-scraping
  • Wire brushing
  • Aging
  • Sculpting

Distressed Wood Flooring vs. Reclaimed Wood Flooring

Distressed wood flooring utilizes specific aging and weathering techniques to make new hardwood flooring appear old. By contrast, reclaimed flooring comes from centuries-old timber. Reclaimed wood flooring comes from old barns and other hardwood structures often tagged for demolition.

Reclaimed flooring naturally reveals the imperfections of the wood, including knots, wormholes, nail holes, cracks, scratches, and color variations. Historic Flooring only works with reclaimed wood to create spectacular distressed wood flooring of exceptional quality and artistry. This means your hardwood flooring is truly one of a kind, each installation brimming with character and history!

What Are the Advantages of Distressed Wood Flooring?

Distressed wood flooring by Historic Flooring offers a visually eye-catching look and gives off a warm, homey ambiance. The array of lines, texture, and flaws of distressed hardwood floors have an engaging appeal and add character to your home or business.

Distressed wood flooring is well-suited for:

  • older buildings
  • beach cottages
  • cabins

In a modern design setting, distressed wood creates a striking design contrast. Whatever the design concept, distressed wood flooring brings a sense of quality, authenticity, and craftsmanship to any space.

We Customize Your Wood Flooring To Meet Your Specifications

At Historic Flooring, we collaborate with you from the start to learn as much as possible about what you have in mind for your flooring project. You become actively involved in selecting your wood, choosing the species, color, and amount of distress.

Communicating through FaceTime, photos, and video, we gather and share information to select the most appropriate reclaimed wood to match your vision. You will receive free samples so that you can get a true sense of your distressed wood flooring before committing to a purchase.

The Finished Product

By nature, every piece of reclaimed hardwood in our inventory has unique properties that new wood cannot imitate. Because of this, our in-house craftsmen meticulously finish each piece, ever careful to preserve the character of the wood throughout the process.

You can opt to have your wood hand-sanded only, and your reclaimed wood flooring will arrive ready for installation and finishing. If you prefer, Historic Flooring will pre-finish your wood for you.

The pre-finishing option includes the cost of hand-sanding as well as the following finishing treatments:

  • Sealed by hand using Waterlox oil-based finish. Staining is available on request.
  • For the final touches, we finish with a double coating of Vermont Natural Wood Finish.
  • The result makes for a spectacular look and quality our competitors cannot beat.

The creative possibilities are endless. If you want other options, please ask.

Exceptional Quality at a Fair Price

Our in-house team of craftsmen customizes your hardwood flooring to your specifications. Once the finish dries, we ship it directly from our facility in Tennessee.
